Intermediate Illustrator car-tracing tutorial

Hi! This short tutorial is meant to help intermediate users who already have basic knowledge of the pen-tool and stuff. I'll show how i created the following image:

the original photo that i scanned from a magazine

If you look closely at direct comparison you'll discover various mistakes, but i think it's still OK. I won't go too much into detail, because that would fill a whole book, but i'll give some little pieces of advice that might be helpful to the less experienced.

One of the problems with tracing is that the objects already created obscure parts of the image that are yet to be done. Some people therefore trace from inside to outside, but with complex objects it's not always possible to differentiate everything into inside and outside. My method is to have a tracing layer and when a bunch of objects has been created i move them to one of the final layers and hide those layers. That way i always work on an uncluttered workspace that only shows the image to be traced and the latest few vectors that i drew. So I had the image in the lowest layer of course, created some extra layers for different parts of the car (one for the inside of the car, one for shadows and tires and one for the rest of the car). To move all objects from one layer to the other click right of the layers circle (pic 1). This selects all objects on a layer. Then unhide the layer above and drag and drop the colored square from one layer to another (pic 2).

It's a good idea to group things that build one object, like all shapes that make one headlight, and name that group to keep a better overview of where things are inside the layer.
