Igor´s Tutorial on creating a type effect as seen on MK12´s ultraloveninja

Hi, if you like motion graphics you will probably know MK12. If you don`t, check out their website at www.mk12.com. Now on their ultraloveninja-movie they used a nice type effect where letters grow out of nowhere. We are going to recreate that effect using After Effects and Illustrator. I am not sure if the method i describe is the one they used but it works, the disadvantage of this method is that it creates long rendering times. The advantage is that it will also automatically make your letters disappear unless you stop them from doing so.

Take a look at it first on the MK12-site, or have a look at my own version.

First create the type in Illustrator. I used the ultraloveninja font which can be downloaded free at the mk12 website. This font is perfect for the effect: it is round, has no serifs and every letter can be traced with one single line. Who knows, maybe they created it specially for that effect. Now as you can see the n and the j meet in the middle (pic 1). If you don´t like that you can do what mk12 did and change the n to become a little longer on the right side (pic 2).
To do this turn the type into outlines and adjust the position of the vertices. Even if you want to keep the letters the way they are you should still turn them into outlines. I also rotated the type a bit. I think it looks nice this way. Then select all the letters and apply a gradient to them.
